Your Child's First Ballet Class in La Jolla: A Parent's Guide

Watching your child step into their first ballet class is a moment many La Jolla parents treasure. If you are thinking about enrolling your little one, here is everything you need to know before that first plié.

What age can my child start?

At Miss Camille Ballet School, our youngest dancers begin at age three. Classes at the La Jolla Recreation Center are grouped by age — ages 3–4 in the earlier class and ages 5–12 in the next — so every child learns alongside friends at a similar stage.

What happens in a first class?

The first lesson is gentle and joyful. Little ones learn to stand tall, point their toes, listen to the music and move together. Miss Camille has a perfect balance of being firm and kind — she expects focus and effort, while always guiding with warmth and encouragement.

Why ballet is wonderful for children

Beyond the grace, ballet builds posture, coordination, strength, discipline and confidence. It is a beautiful first introduction to music and movement — and every year our students shine on stage in the annual Ballet School Show, a proud milestone for the whole family.

What to wear

Keep it simple: a leotard, soft tights or leggings, and ballet shoes, with hair tidied back. You will find handmade tights, hair accessories and pretty ballet bags in our boutique.

How to enrol
